Mills River Rescue and Sanctuary

Our Mission

Mills River Rescue and Sanctuary provides sanctuary, rehabilitation, and finds forever homes for abused and neglected farm animals, focusing on education and advocacy for animal welfare.

Mills River Rescue and Sanctuary is a farm dedicated to rescuing animals in need of rescue or sanctuary. Our rescue started back when owner Patti Maroney worked for another rescue and realized how much need there was for helping ponies and donkeys, so she started her own rescue. In 2017, Mills River Rescue and Sanctuary became an official 501 c3 non profit rescue. From that moment on, MRR has helped rescue many ponies and donkeys from locals that may have fallen on hard times, neglect or abuse and from auctions that could have ended in slaughter. Some of our rescues have severe medical conditions or are elderly, so are not adoptable. We owe it to them to provide a safe place for them for the rest of their lives.

We believe it is important for people to understand why horses, ponies, donkeys and other farm animals need our help. We rescue animals from slaughter, backyard breeding, financial hardship, and/or neglect.
Horse slaughter is illegal in the U.S. but is still legal in Canada and Mexico.
